Auto-ID Systems for Hermes Midlands Super-HUB in UKFollow-up order from BEUMER Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG
Wiesbaden, 29th June 2018 – VITRONIC Dr.-Ing. Stein Bildverarbeitungssysteme GmbH received a follow-up order from BEUMER Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG for the end customer Hermes UK for two more Auto-ID systems for the Midlands Super-HUB in Rugby, UK. Hermes’ currently largest logistics center in Rugby, Warwickshire was opened in August 2017 and will now be expanded to reach a sortation capacity of prox. 1.5 Mio shipments per day.
With building and extending the new Midlands Super-HUB, Hermes is reacting to the fast increase of shipments due to the continuing e-commerce boom. The consumer delivery specialist counts on state-of-the-art technology for being able to comfortably handle rising volumes.
The extension of the hub includes two Auto-ID systems that read barcodes on five sides of the shipments. In addition, the volume of the package is captured certified, and all relevant information from each shipment is stored in an archiving system.
Four Auto-ID systems in the first stage
VITRONIC already delivered four Auto-ID systems for the first stage of expansion, the project has been realized together with BEUMER Group as general contractor. The camera systems are installed over two 1.400 mm wide BEUMER belt-tray sorters that run at a speed of 2,5 m/s. The high-precision line-scan cameras reliably capture and process about 40.000 shipments per hour. The next level will run three sorters with six Auto-ID systems with a maximum capacity of 1,5 million shipments per day.
Steve Stanbridge, Engineering Manager at Hermes UK says “The four multi-sided systems have now been in operation for eight months and have given us excellent read rates and transparent shipment data. VITRONIC has been a reliable partner throughout the years and different sites, the Auto-ID systems support our commitment to provide world-class delivery solutions.”
Markus Vogelsang, Head of Machine Control Sortation and Distribution at BEUMER Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co KG continues “BEUMER and VITRONIC have been working together for many years, also at international projects.”
